The Cavalier
When the Amsterdam newspaper broke the news that England’s Queen Charlotte’s first two sons were fathered by the French Ambassador and not King George III, the French King had Maurice de la Tour paint the Chevalier d’Eon... as a woman. Shipped to London for prominent display, it is currently in the British Museum. You have to ask to see it. This is that story.
